1. What is your birthplace?
Saurabh: Dahod, Gujarat.
2. How do you find an interest in fashion designing?
Saurabh: I found clothing and the way people dressed fascinating since I was 4 years old. I always wanted to be a fashion designer. I went into medical college because most of them in my family pursued medical. My father is a pediatrician himself.
I always thought that I wasn’t doing what I loved while I was pursuing my MBBS & DCH. So I finally started opening up about my interest in fashion and had to go against my family to pursue my career in fashion designing in the year 2009.
3. From where did you learn about designing also, according to you – self- learning or Learning from an expert? Which is more important?
Saurabh: I did a 2 year advance diploma in fashion designing & styling from Istituti Callegari Milano. It was a full time course.
You need to have a knack of creativity and love for clothing in order to make a good fashion designer and stylist because fashion designing is not just about designing clothes, there’s a lot more to it.
I personally think that both self-learning & professional learning is important. Because that’s what make you best at what you are.
4. Who is your favorite designer?
Saurabh: The fashion designers whose designs I totally resemble with are;
I really love the way they choose to design their clothes
5. What was the first reaction of your family when you told them that you want to choose fashion designing as your profession?
Saurabh: I used to keep telling my family about my interest in fashion but they considered medical a far better option, because of what they achieved in their career span.
And that’s what all are parents are like, they always want the best for us. And honestly surviving in the fashion industry takes more than just the degree. You need to be perseverant & just keep going forward. So I don’t blame them.
They actually knew that someday I was going to change my career. My dad even though not happy about it asked me to decide what I want now that I was financially independent.
My mom and sister has been always supportive about my career in fashion designing. My father didn’t talk to me for 2 years because of this. But you know in the end everything gets better.
6. Do you have role models?
Saurabh: The genes were passed to me by my Nani who is 85 years old. She does crochet, knitting since she was 20 years old. And now she is 85 years old, she still takes out some, time does what she really loves. So Yes, I Nani is my role model.
